For Sexual Assault Awareness Month, here are some things you need to know.

1) There are many forms of sexual assault.
Sexual Assault manifests in many forms including, but not limited to: rape, grooming, catcalling, unconsensual touching, and forceful sexual activities. Sexual Assault is defined as any sexual act or behavior that is performed without consent, and thus, covers a broad range of incidents.
2) It can happen anywhere, anytime.
Although over half of all reported rapes occur at or near the victims’ homes, sexual violence can happen anywhere at anytime. Remember to be aware of your surroundings wherever you go!
3) Anyone can experience sexual assault.
Sexual violence is not reserved for one specific group of people. Anyone can be a victim. In fact, around 80% of women report being sexually assaulted, and a large 40% of men also report being sexually assaulted or harassed. Sexual assault can occur at any age, although around 58% happen between the ages of 18 and 34. Although these stats provide useful, it is important to know that anyone can be a victim of sexual violence and you should always be aware of the possibilities.
4) Sexual Assault does not have to include physical force.
Often times, sexual assault consists of mental and emotional force, rather than physical. This could include threats of physical or social harm. Psychological manipulation and coercion make up a significant portion of sexual assault occurrences in the United States.
5) Perpetrators can be anybody.
Sexual violence is not only committed by strangers, anyone can be a perpetrator. Almost all sexual assault cases are committed by someone known by the victim, most often an acquaintance or family member. Around half of perpetrators are over the age of 30 and are compromised of all races, backgrounds, and appearances. Although these statistics give a general idea of what to look out for, it is important to be aware that ANYBODY can commit acts of sexual violence.
Reminder: If you or someone you know has experienced sexual assault, know that you are not alone.
